Why do you Americans have a totally distorted vision about italy and the italians?

Americans manage to have a distorted view of about 98% of countries and their peoples. I don't know how it's done, but I ume that America, even though it's a continent, manages to be very insular indeed. So insular there are times when I'm left speechless.
