Why DID Obama remove his name from the Michigan Ballot?

Don't tell me it was because he though the votes wouldn't count. It was not a requirement of the DNC to remove his name. No one had ever done that before. Or was it because he knew it would create controversy down the line if they decided to count the votes? Chicago politics all over again?
